How to Treat Bertie

🚐 How to Treat Bertie

Bertie is a classic – full of character, charm, and quirks. He’s not a modern motorhome, and that’s all part of his appeal. In return for the joy he brings, we ask that you treat him with care, patience, and respect.

  • Drive gently – Bertie is happiest cruising at a relaxed pace. No harsh acceleration, no racing – he’s built for the scenic route.

  • Keep it clean – Please return Bertie in the same clean condition you received him. We’ll supply cleaning basics to help.

  • No smoking or vaping – To preserve his vintage interior and the health of future guests, Bertie is strictly a smoke-free zone.

  • Respect his limits – He’s nearly 50! Avoid overloading him and stick to paved roads – no off-roading or wild terrain.

  • Weather wise – Bertie’s awning and windows handle light rain, but in high winds or storms, it’s best to keep everything secure and take precautions.

If you look after Bertie, he’ll take great care of you – giving you memories, not mishaps.

🛣️ How to Drive Bertie

Bertie isn’t your average modern van – he’s a vintage gent with his own rhythm. Driving him is part of the adventure! Here’s what you need to know before taking the wheel:

🚗 Take It Slow

  • Bertie loves a relaxed cruise – his ideal speed is 45–55 mph. No need to rush; he’s all about the journey, not the destination.

  • Overtaking? Best avoided unless absolutely necessary. He’s not built for racing.

🕹️ Manual Gears

  • Bertie has a 4-speed manual gearbox – you’ll need to be confident with a clutch and gearstick.

  • Gear changes are a little more “loose” than modern cars – take your time and don’t force it.

  • Use second gear to pull off, especially on hills – first gear is mainly for crawling starts.

⛽ Fuel & Range

  • Bertie takes unleaded petrol – we’ll show you where to fill up.

  • He’s not the most fuel-efficient chap, so plan for more frequent fuel stops on longer drives.

⚠️ Braking & Handling

  • No ABS – Bertie handles more like a classic car.

  • Leave extra braking distance, especially when slowing down from speed.

  • He’s wider than he looks – give yourself plenty of room on narrow roads and corners.

🚦 Hills & Traffic

  • He’ll get up hills, but not in a hurry – be kind with the clutch and avoid stalling.

  • In stop-start traffic, go easy on the clutch and avoid riding it.

💡Top Tips for Happy Driving

  • Plan your route – avoid steep mountain passes or busy city centres.

  • Keep it calm – sudden moves and hard braking aren’t his thing.

  • Enjoy the moment – driving Bertie is about slowing down and soaking it all in.
