Meet Robert, lovingly called Bertie — a 1972 VW camper van packed with stories in his panels and wanderlust in his wiring. A true old soul on four wheels, Bertie has spent over 50 years cruising through life with charm, curiosity, and a signature vintage flair.
🥖 From Bread Van to Free Spirit
Bertie’s journey began in the East End of London, where he earned his stripes as a bread van — delivering warm loaves and crusty buns through winding city streets. The locals knew Bertie by the cheerful hum of his engine and the unmistakable scent of fresh-baked bread. But beneath that hardworking exterior, Bertie dreamed of open skies and seaside freedom.
🏄♂️ Cornwall Calling
Answering the call of the salt and surf, Bertie rolled down to Cornwall in the 1980s. There, parked beside surfboards in Newquay, he traded his bakery life for beach vibes, ferrying sun-kissed surfers from one sandy bay to the next. He fell head over wheels for the slow pace, the sea breeze, and a life lived outdoors.
🏔️ Heeding the Highlands
Eventually, the call of the mountains grew louder than the waves. Bertie ventured north to the Scottish Highlands, spending peaceful years among the lochs and glens near Fort William. Parked with a breathtaking view of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, he watched the weather roll in from the west. Hikers, musicians, and dreamers came and went — but Bertie remained a steady presence, rooted in peace and the scent of pine.
🌿 A New Chapter: Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast
In spring 2025, Bertie followed his heart across the water to Northern Ireland — instantly feeling at home the moment his wheels hit the ground.
Now a proud part of Wee Campers NI, Bertie spends his days exploring the spectacular Causeway Coast. He adores Portrush with its friendly buzz, sea views, and timeless charm — especially when parked at East Strand with a flask of tea and the soothing sound of the surf nearby.
But Bertie’s spirit is restless. He weaves his way along the coast to the mystical Giant’s Causeway, pauses at Ballintoy Harbour where sea and sky blur, and journeys down the quiet road to Dunseverick, where castle ruins meet crashing waves and sheep outnumber people.
His days are filled with coastal drives, mossy laybys, and stories shared under starry skies. Whether you’re on a romantic retreat, a family getaway, or a solo escape, Bertie makes every journey feel like a little piece of magic.
Traveling with Bertie means you’re not just renting a camper — you’re sharing the road with a living legend. So go slow, take the scenic route, and discover Northern Ireland one hidden gem at a time.
